Airbus wanted to reduce weight on their new A380 by redesigning the wing leading-edge ribs, while maintaining all mechanical and electrical functionality.

Altair ProductDesign Cuts Weight on A380 Rib Design by Almost Half

Using OptiStruct, Altair’s CAE-based optimization software, the mass of the rib package was reduced by 44 percent, saving 500kg. The project utilized a unique approach in that all of the ribs were optimized simultaneously. At the same time, this method ensured that overall system synergies and electrical conduit requirements were maintained. Moreover, the new rib designs were delivered within seven weeks, and Altair was awarded the “Airbus President’s Award” for achievement in weight reduction.
