TROY, Mich., August 24, 2004 - Altair Engineering, a global leader in product design development, engineering software and grid computing technology, has announced the realignment of its Product Design and Development business unit to include Development and Mechatronics in the same activity.

Mechatronics, a system in which electronics are used to control a mechanical system through the use of electro-mechanical actuators, is becoming a more crucial part of product design, particularly in the automotive industry. Altair now offers an integrated product design and development team that can bring complex system concepts to prototype.

Tony Norton, formerly Altair's Director of Electrical and Mechatronics, is now Director of Development and has responsibility for all aspects of product development and testing along with all mechatronic activities including multi-body dynamics simulation, a process that involves the modeling of moving mechanical systems.

"A large percentage of our product development work involves the integration of electrical and mechanical systems," Norton said. "By reconfiguring our organization to reflect this continuing trend, we are better able to serve our clients who are working on complex systems engineering problems."

According to Norton, the control of electro-mechanical systems combines many of Altair's competencies. There is a trend in the industry toward combining expertise in the mechanical, electrical and software domains. The merging of Altair's development and mechatronics groups will provide a dedicated, interdisciplinary team that can streamline the transformation of an idea to reality without distraction.

"We have experience working with our customers to provide the cross-functional product design and development knowledge they require," said Norton. "The combination of product development and mechatronics allows us to develop the complex systems our customers demand. Altair is a one-stop-shop for customers wanting to take an early concept to an operation physical prototype."
